Square Meal Review of Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester ?

The Dorchester’s flagship restaurant is sending mixed messages of late: for every visitor who trumpets the food as “absolutely outstanding”, another dismisses it as “quite forgettable”. One thing is certain: the combination of “Swiss bank account” prices (don’t even ask about the treasure-trove French wine list) and three-Michelin-star status inevitably leads to some of the highest expectations in London. Come with deep pockets and an open mind and you’ll find technically flawless cooking which values restraint and harmony, from the signature sauté gourmand of lobster with chicken quenelles and homemade pasta to the just-picked components of the vegetarian ‘menu jardin’. But restraint also governs the atmosphere of the blandly beige room, where vast tables feel six feet apart and the fibre-optic curtain of the private ‘table lumière’ twinkles like a celestial beam. “Fabulously attentive” service gets a universal thumbs-up but, as ever, we recommend first-timers try the all-inclusive lunch before committing to the Ducasse full monty.

    Nomface :: Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, London

    Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester was my first 3 Michelin star experience. Set in Park Lane in the grand Dorchester Hotel where it was evident that the clientele enjoyed the finer things in life. The restaurant is accessed halfway down the long tea room; it felt a bit strange waltzing through the area past people enjoying lunch and afternoon tea to get to the restaurant. The dining room was larger than I expected, even with spaced out tables. The dining room is elegant and impressive, it is dominated by a centerpiece curtain of Swarovki crystals which surrounds a private dining table.

  1. I know not everyone is a big fan of Valentine's Day, but I love it! The opportunity to celebrate love, spend some special time with Mr S and to eat lots of chocolate and drink pink champagne! This year would be our fourth Valentine's Day together, but it felt extra special as it would be our first as a married couple. Salon Park Lane

This room is bathed in natural light and seats up to 30 guests. Room hire for lunch is £350 and dinner £750.

Salon Privé

A very private alcove that seats up to 12 guests. Room hire is £200.

Table Lumière

The centrepiece of the restaurant which is nearly screened from view, yet offers the ambience and buzz of the restaurant for the guests' enjoyment. Lunch offers the a la carte, tasting and seasonal menu. For dinner, the tasting and seasonal menu is available. Room hire is £200.

Alain Ducasse

French culinary heavyweight and empire builder Alain Ducasse returned to the capital at the end of 2007 to launch his eponymous restaurant at the Dorchester, securing ex-Marco Pierre White chef Jocelyn Herland to head up the kitchen. At first, the restaurant received distinctly mixed reviews & missed out on a Michelin star in 2008. However, Ducasse's formidable background clearly counts for something, since he scooped two Michelin stars the following year, and added a precious third in 2010.
