Square Meal Review of Watatsumi ?

It’s off the beaten track, rather ‘cold’ and rarely full, but imposing Watatsumi is still appreciated by diners looking for a quiet tête-à-tête and some carefully considered Japanese food. The menu has evolved since the grand, marble-pillared dining room first opened its doors within the Club Quarters Hotel and pricey dishes with luxury ingredients have been replaced by a pared-back selection of staples running from tempura in a crisp, light batter to udon noodles and decently priced bento boxes. Our sushi selection of nigiri and maki rolls was carefully prepared and reassuringly fresh, though the stars of the show are flaky miso-glazed black cod fillet and delicious mini mochi (sticky rice balls with zesty flavourings). Asahi beer, Koshu wine and saké provide support, while a theatre menu offers two/three courses (plus a glass of house wine) for £19.50/25.50.
