Founded as a market stall back in 1934, the Contini family’s foodie pioneer is now a landmark Edinburgh destination and top dog when it comes to Italian food and drink. Housed in a neatly converted
stable block, the Caffè Bar is a mainstay of good taste, and the menu covers all bases from breakfast onwards; the coffee is exceptionally good, and you can pick any wine from the deli’s excellent
range to drink in (retail price plus £6 corkage). A toasted panatella sandwich loaded with spicy Italian sausage and wholegrain mustard satisfies early hunger pangs, and there are some fine pizzas
and pasta dishes too (spaghetti with new season’s chanterelles, for example). Alternatively, start with some charcuterie or a creamy goats’ cheeses salad, before sampling a courgette and mint
omelette or grilled lamb chops with rosemary. Note: extended opening hours during August.
