This large modern gastropub gets absolutely packed at weekend lunchtimes, when locals fight for space on the traffic-ridden pavement terrace & in the sizeable dining area beyond. Centred around
a busy open kitchen & stainless-steel bar, the interior feels slightly industrial, but its curious mix of recycled church pews & bentwood chairs, worn leather sofas & funky lampshades
helps to soften the look. Food is more straightforward – think Sunday roasts, antipasti snack platters or beer-battered cod with chunky chips & tartare sauce. The back bar is as crowded as the
rest of the pub, thanks to its stock of bottled & draught lagers, imaginative soft drinks & respectable wines, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape at just £21.45 a bottle.
