A Whitby harbourside resident since 1940 or thereabouts, the Magpie is arguably the mother of all chippies. Families dote on the place, and devotees will remember when the owners provided umbrellas
if the heavens opened; these days, an extension provides shelter from the storm – although the queues haven’t diminished. The main attraction is a wondrous array of fish procured from the local
boats, although the kitchen casts its net well beyond battered classics such as cod and haddock. But that’s just the beginning: also expect a haul of daily specials (poached monkfish in creamy
tarragon sauce), kids’ deals, veggie options and a few meaty staples – all served in trencherman Yorkshire helpings. For afters, take a look at the legendary 30-strong list of homemade desserts. To
drink, a beer or a pot of tea generally does the trick.
Our first excursion was in the seaside, port town of Whitby. It was such a lovely town, I was impressed by the fact there was a queue nearly outside every restaurants that served Fish & Chips and the town itself smells Fish & Chips apart for the top part on the hill near Whitby Abbey. Of course the longest queue was where my friend wanted to go: The Magpie Café, but he told me it was the one of the best Fish & Chips in the UK.
