As a rallying point for glamour models, premiership footballers and hedge-fund managers, this 80ft-long, double-sided onyx bar is low on subtlety but high on people-watching potential. During
daylight hours, it's a sedate affair, but nightfall heralds the arrival of the red-carpet brigade, with a pulsating house-music soundtrack, billowing muslin curtains and strip lights fuelling the
spirit of hedonistic abandon. Martinis lead the charge on the drinks list – try a marmalade Jack (Jack Daniel's shaken with marmalade, honey water and Grand Marnier) or perhaps a truly seismic
Vesuvio (Ketel One Citroen vodka with lychee liqueur, ginger, lemongrass and chilli). The consistent quality of drinks and generous bar snacks such as burgers, charcuterie and mezze plates has been
commended, although some have suggested the service could be a little zippier at peak times.
Our first stop was the Long Bar at the Sanderson, on Berners Street, to try their new Winter Warmers menu featuring cocktails made from Rémy Martin VSOP Mature Cask Finish Cognac. These six cocktails, all £12.50, are served warm and combine flavours that aren’t usually found in their cold relatives… Port, red wine and cognac infused with walnut. Not your average cocktail ingredients, but in these warm versions they work. My favourite was the Apple Crumble, Rémy Martin, warm apple purée and a fluffy cream topping...
