Square Meal Review of The Don Restaurant ?

‘Up there with the very best in the City’, insists a regular who has been frequenting The Don for more than a decade – no wonder, given that this model of indulgent dining combines ‘fantastic value’ with trusted service, skilful cooking and an upper-crust wine list. The generously spaced, high-ceilinged Old Restaurant Room is a picture of elegance with its seven huge windows overlooking a tiny courtyard and seven original Hoyland paintings blown up to create translucent blinds. Food-wise, the kitchen’s lobster risotto is ‘to die for’, likewise a terrine of cured salmon and beetroot, while the quality of meat cookery shows in everything from breast of Domme duck with foie gras ravioli to magnificent chateaubriand. And for a high-kicking finale, try the raspberry bavarois ‘cancan' with pineapple coulis. A simpler menu is available in the basement Bistro, and The Don also takes great pride in its ‘superlative' 400-bin wine cellar, which includes wines from the restaurant's own Trinity Hill vineyard in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

Private Dining at The Don Restaurant

The Don’s stunning brick-lined and vaulted Sandeman Room was originally a bottling cellar for port and sherry shippers. It seats 20-24 guests and is perfect for intimate, atmospheric dinners. This room is also available for group breakfasts or drinks receptions.

The Bistro is another of The Don’s converted wine cellars, exuding olde-worlde atmosphere through its vaulted brick walls and arched ceiling. Its cosy banquettes seat 30-40 comfortably; there is also a small private bar for pre-dinner gatherings.

The Old Restaurant was The Don’s original dining room when it opened in 2000. A light, airy space thanks to its five huge courtyard-facing windows, The Old Restaurant features a stunning double-height wine tower and original John Hoyland artwork. It seats 30-45.

The White Room seats 40-62 people and features two original John Hoyland paintings and a wine wall. The Wine Study is available for pre-dinner drinks receptions.

The Wine Study is a semi-private room that can seat 14-18 guests around one boardroom table. A stunning wine wall separates The White Room from the Wine Study.
