Effortlessly unpretentious and thoroughly laid-back, The Belgian Arms is the second opening from restaurateur Nick Parkinson and manager Nick Martinez of Royal Oak, Paley Street fame. It’s a disarmingly charming country pub, complete with a pleasant beer garden looking onto
the village green and good food at attractive prices – no wonder the locals are chuffed. The menu doesn’t stray far from the tried-and-tested gastro stalwarts, but the kitchen proves its worth with
hearty renditions of chicken livers on toast with a poached egg, Cornish haddock and chips or slow-cooked lamb belly with braised peas and hispi cabbage. Meanwhile, daily specials such as tomato,
ricotta, broad bean and mint salad or duck confit with dauphinoise potatoes give the cooking some extra oomph. Kids’ menus, Sunday roasts, real ales and a pithy little wine list round off a
cheerful, family-friendly package.
