A survivor amid the new-build concrete canyons of St Giles, this refurbished boozer with its dark saloons, patterned tiles & plum/gold wallpaper is worth a detour. The Angel’s owner, Yorkshire
brewery Samuel Smith’s, has stripped the place of the promotional material & gimmicky junk that infects so many mainstream boozers, preferring darts & chess sets to juke boxes & fruit
machines. Its full range of beers is on show, & there’s also an approachable range of wines & trad pub grub, plus a daytime patio out back. Centuries ago, the inn on this site was a
stopping-off point for prisoners being carted from Newgate prison to execution at Tyburn (now Marble Arch). They’d be allowed to sup their last earthly bowl of ale here before climbing back ‘on the
wagon’ – hence the expression.
