What was The Luxe has been transformed into an offshoot of City stalwart Smiths of Smithfield – although the hallmarks of its
clubby predecessor remain: a buzzy ground-floor café/bar, a more serious dining room upstairs, and a drinking den in the basement. Meat plays a starring role in the main restaurant, which is decked
out in the now-familiar steakhouse garb – think brick walls and dark-wood furniture. There’s no denying the quality, either – a slow-braised short rib of beef slides effortlessly off the bone,
while perfectly grilled lamb is perked up with aubergine ‘caviar’ and rainbow chard. Starters of ‘lucky’ squid with Chinese broccoli, and salt-cod fritters with parsley and lemon mayo, however,
seem rather meagre given the price, but things perk up again on the drinks list, with some notable wine producers alongside refreshing bottled beers and cocktails.
Smith of Smithfield in Farringdon is the venture by the celebrity chef John Torode… Known well here as the judge of Masterchef UK and celebrity Masterchef. With that credit to his name, I had high hopes for this place to be deliver some bang on Masterchef judge high standard cooking...

On an amazing Monday night in June we were invited up to the top floor of Smiths of Smithfields (SoS) in Farringdon for a exhibition of what they do best. What a lovely view it was, not only talking about the beef carcass glistening in all it’s glory, but the spacious and airy room itself. The top floor boasts a naturally lit dining area, along with a balcony area along the side. This was a great place to mingle and start the balmy summery evening, with canapes and appetizers doing the rounds including these juicy oysters below...
