Behind Sedap's plain shop front is a sweet little budget eatery that you can easily fall in love with. A few lanterns and faded photographs brighten up the bare-bones interior, but penny-wise
crowds are here for the zingy Chinese/Malaysian food – especially the £7.80 lunch deal (a starter of crispy chicken skin or a spring roll followed by any beef, chicken or vegetable dish). It's also
worth investing in the excellent rice and noodle plates: char kway teow (£8.50) would only cost a few ringgits at a Penang hawker stall, but who's complaining when it delivers such plump prawns and
a true, smoky taste? Haianese chicken rice, nasi lemak and archar (Nyonya-style pickled vegetables with peanuts) are other hot favourites. To drink, stay in Malaysia for teh tarik – tea sweetened
with condensed milk.
I cannot vouch for the rest of the faire on the menu of this rather ordinary looking restaurant. I still can't resist the obligatory order of roti canai a.k.a. roti prata every time I visit. These were made fresh to order by the in-house Roti King himself. And I have to say this is the best of its kind that I have tasted since I left Singapore...
