Afternoon tea is anything but twee at Scoff & Banter, where urban styling, bold graphics and flamboyant fabrics suit the trendy Seven Dials clientele more than chintz ever could. It’s cheering
to see the place nurturing the next generation of tea-takers with its ‘stupendous’ version aimed at young audiences heading for Matilda the Musical over the way at the Cambridge Theatre. At
£13.75, a collation of ‘ludicrously lovely lemon cake’, ‘tremendously terrific trifle’, ‘fantastic fondue’ and honey ham sandwiches (‘a tribute to lovely, sweet schoolteachers everywhere’) served
with delicious hot chocolate or ‘magic milkshake’ are tailor-made for kids – although mums and dads can also indulge their inner Veruca Salt with an adults’ version (£29.50). There’s a standard tea
(£17.50) for those who want to play it straight.
