Square Meal Review of Scarfe's at Rosewood London (bar) ?

Named after famed political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, this palatial, pillared marbled wing of the Rosewood London hotel is an imperial triumph from designer Martin Brudnizki, whose fruity take on Edwardian pomp creates a classic luxurious space – with great cocktails attached. Sink into deep accommodating sofas by a roaring fire while taking in Scarfe’s edgy works, and anticipate classy calls prepped at an imposing L-shaped bar. Try humidor (Chivas 18 Year Old, white port and absinthe), hats off (mescal, Aperol and agave-sweetened citrus fruit juices) or pith helmet – a reference to Britain’s colonial past, notably in India. Raj-style tiffin snacks also feature on the bar menu, alongside appealingly presented smoked salmon, merguez pizzette, and addictive cheese and onion sourdough toasties. Wines, whiskies, a grand piano and polished service are further reasons to adopt this distinguished drawing room-cum-library.

Wrap Your Lips Around This :: Scarfes Bar

Scarfes Bar is an homage to the fruitiness of British conviviality, its walls adorned with caricature-type artwork and its menu teetering between casserole and curry. This mixed up madness is housed in the recently opened Rosewood Hotel (previously The Chancery Court Hotel), refurbished beautifully and granted grade II listed status. The entrance to the hotel is grand and architecturally classical, opening up into a wistful courtyard that you might imagine in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Scarfes bar is located behind a vintage hand-revolving door, and offers total sensory delight. A grand piano sits in the...

The Cutlery Chronicles :: scarfes bar, holborn - review

The Indian venues I have recently stumbled across - stuffing me with all things keema and seekh and sambar, cooked in tandoors and on tawas, and served in pretty copper karahis - have been doing it quite well. It seems I’m on a good-Indian roll. The most recent is Scarfes Bar, stashed away in the splendid Holborn neoclassical landmark that is now the Rosewood Hotel.

In a similar vein to Zumbura, Scarfes Bar is about as far from the well-worn and tired Indian high-street restaurants of yesteryear as you could hope to achieve. Firstly, it’s not a restaurant - it’s a bar. A beautiful, stately bar. A bar with...

The bar was named after Gerald Scarfe, a London born satirical cartoonist who worked for Punch magazine and Private Eye during the early 1960s. Scarfes Bar has not only borrowed Scarfe’s name, but also his artistic vision by showing off a selection of his distinctive drawings of historical and well-known personalities.
