The first London outpost of a Midlands-based mini chain, Saffron Red is squirreled away in a basement near the junction with Fenchurch Street and adopts the house style when it comes to interiors –
think smart comforts and contemporary design, with a few prints on the walls and the minimum of unnecessary clutter. The lengthy menu covers all bases, from tikkas, tandooris, kormas and biryanis
to less-familiar house specials such as achari lamb with pickling spices, shatkora gosht (cooked with an Indian citrus fruit), Hyderabadi duck and ‘perfectly spiced’ chicken rezalla with tomatoes,
coconut and green chillis. There’s also a wide choice of familiar stuff for veggies, from samosas and pakoras to full-sized versions of brinjal bhaji and chana masala. Service is helpful, courteous
and chatty – making the place ‘perfect for couples’, according to one correspondent.
