Square Meal Review of Quilon ?

Quilon has acquired something approaching cult status – as well as a Michelin star – for its fragrant south-Indian coastal food, and chef Sriram Aylur brings a light touch to the native specialities of Kerala, Karnataka and Goa. His cooking is all about spicy refinement: char-grilled scallops come with mango and chilli relish, marinated tiger prawns are enriched with tomato, mustard, curry leaves and coconut masala, and there’s a punchy mixed seafood moilee, too. Meat eaters also have plenty to consider, from braised lamb shank to duck with green-pepper sauce – perfect with something from the fascinating list of world beers. The interiors are a subtle mix of traditional Indian with contemporary London cool (moody lighting, pastel-green shades, amber flourishes), while the spectacular private dining room features an old boat transformed into a cocktail cabinet.

Wine List of the Year Award Finalist

Working with consultant Peter McCombie MW, the team at Quilon deserve credit for really trying to make this list accessible to customers. Wines are split up into many small sections that can be stylistic (‘Fresh, Fragrant, Dry’) or varietal, pricing is fair, and a decent number are available by both the glass and the carafe. Clear, accurate and inclusive, many ethnic restaurants could learn from this.

    Wrap Your Lips Around This :: Quilon

    If the dubiously awarded Michelin star system is anything to go by, then it is clear that Indian cuisine seems to lag behind all others. In London at least, there are only a handful of Indian restaurants graced with this distinction. One of them includes Quilon, which has retained its single star since 2008 under the direction of head chef Sriram Aylur.

    Quilon creates a taste of Southern Indian cuisine, picking up traditional dishes from along the Keralan coast. The most familiar of these will possibly be the masala dosa, the Quilon variety served as a sweet miniature version with a moist potato masala...

    inher30s :: Quilon

    Quilon isn’t your usual option for Indian cuisine, it doesn’t feature any of the usual Indian options like Chicken Tikka Masala, Korma and Naan. Some may be familiar with the traditional South-Indian favourites like Dosas and Idli, but for the majority (including myself), that’s where my knowledge ends. Quilon, with it’s one michelin star, goes even further to extending our Indian cuisine knowledge base and is dedicated to the coastal cuisines of South India. Don’t know what that means or where that is? Neither do I, but I was in for a treat!

    To make sure we try a little bit of everything, we go for the...

  1. There are only six Michelin Star Indian restaurants in London right now - a number which i expected to be a lot larger. I guess the main reason for there not being so many is because both service, and decor are sometimes not at the forefront of an Indian restaurants mind. Some however, like Quilon know that Indian food deserves this kind of environment and attention to detail. I’d been meaning to try it for some while so we decided to go along one saturday and try out their incredibly good value for money set lunch deal. A piggy bank savings worth of £24 will get you three courses, poppadoms and chutneys, amuse bouche,...
