Public House is a true eccentric, lurking with mischievous intent just off Upper Street. Antique chairs, chesterfields, standard lamps and assorted curios give the bar a kooky charm, but
idiosyncrasy can sometimes tip over into preening pretension, and the venue has its detractors. Nevertheless, regulars (a hip bunch) love it, praising the ‘passionate and knowledgeable’ staff and
‘fantastic’ drinks. Wines have been chosen with care, and homemade lemonade and imported bottled beers are also available. But it’s what the place bills as ‘mixed beverages of a fancy, delicious or
dangerous nature’ that steal the show: serious cocktails like the ankle breaker (rum, vanilla sugar, cherry liqueur and fresh lemon), ‘infamous for its ability to induce a wobble’. Food is modern
European – steak tartare, sea bream – at prices that won’t offend.
