It may be squirrelled away off Kensington’s main drag, but there’s no shortage of culinary fireworks at this bastion of urbane, civilised dining – thanks to chef Tim Allen, who has set the place
alight and picked up a Michelin star for his refined, complex cooking. Red-hot technique rather than voguish gimmickry is the hallmark of dishes such as slow-cooked duck egg with white-bean purée
and ceps, duck confit with cured foie gras and sherry-vinegar caramel, or a deliciously light combo of hand-dived plaice, crayfish, anchovy potatoes, seashore herbs and crayfish cappuccino. After
that, white chocolate mousse with strawberries, orange ice cream and star-anise meringues makes a superlative finale. Set in a quirky townhouse with large windows, cosy connecting rooms and
restrained colours, atmospheric Launceston Place is also reckoned to be ‘great for a romantic night out’, with the maître d’ and sommelier at the top of their game.
Launceston Place has been at the back of my mind for absolutely ages now. Everyone keeps talking about it, photos are popping up all over Twitter and the food looks stunning. The head chef here that's worked his magic is, Tim Allen. Tim's started working here in 2012, and was previously housed at none less than the two Michelin starred restaurant, Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds. He gained his first Michelin star here at Launceston Place, in the same year he started - what a fantastic achievement...

It’s not often than we can be proud of British food, dare I say cuisine, but Tim Allen and his band of chefs at Launceston Place rescue it magnificently. Our food revelation begins in the lushest fold of Kensington, in the sweet spot between Gloucester Road and Hyde Park where those infinitely elegant townhouses, layered like wedding cakes, rule supreme. There’s two dining rooms and both have a fairly odd layout so no two tables are the same. It’s a bit like eating in the downstairs of someone’s house – someone who has a really, really lovely house. Dark grey walls, plush carpets and tables adorned with white tablecloths made for a beautiful space with a really relaxed and comfortable atmosphere...

Launceston Place is part of the D&D restaurant group and is located in a regency house tucked away in an adorable part of Kensington. The street is beautiful and grand. As for the décor, it remains very formal and austere with its dark, greyish colours.For a Michelin restaurant, they do a surprisingly good value Sunday lunch menu with three-courses for £29.50. Unlike some set lunch menus, there were a good range of options within each course. Furthermore, there appear to be only minor differences between the options on the lunch menu and those on the a la carte menu priced at £48 for three courses...
