The spectacular nocturnal panorama visible from The Shard is definitely London, but the bar at its new northern Chinese restaurant, Hutong, is so dimly lit that you might imagine yourself caught in a power cut at owner David Yeo’s Hong Kong
original. However, sharp mixology should crank up your generator in no time – any list that employs medicinal herbs and plants in its ‘cocktail cures’ is worth attention. Star anise – good for
asthma, insomnia, bronchitis, etc – appears in a signature Cognac, kumquat, Grand Marnier and tamarind crusta. Elsewhere, a shot of Tequila, Midori melon liqueur and lime with added kiwi fruit
apparently keeps one’s gums in good nick, while the Pu-erh tea in a Taoist blossom (Monkey Shoulder whisky, plum wine and Branca Menta) is claimed to combat flu – so ditch the Lemsip and head to
the Shard should you feel shivery.
What a marvellous little gem of a bistro this is. There’s a small yet diverse wine list, of which most are available by glass or carafe. And just as well, because Casse Croûte is the perfect spot for whiling away a lazy Sunday afternoon, starting off with some fizz or rosé before moving on to deep and meaningful reds like the delightful Châteauneuf-du-Pape.The menu changes daily and can be found on the restaurant’s twitter feed, so I won’t go into grave detail about what we had but judging from the consistent happiness our dishes provided, you’ll be equally satisfied...
