New owners have snapped up the lease on what was The Compass in Chapel Market – a few hundred yards away (as the crow flies) from their other Islington bar, Elk in the Woods. A brooding mural that would surely terrify Hitchcock heroine Tippi Hedren (remember The Birds) sets the scene for pints of Murder a Crow, the pub’s own real ale prepared to a secret recipe by Kentish microbrewery, The Old Dairy. Of similar geographic provenance you’ll also find Chapel Down’s Curious IPA and sparkling English wine, plus apple-crisp Ortega from Biddenden – alongside Tempranillo, the entry-level red on a 24-bin list. An all-day menu has breakfast dishes from £4, plus sandwiches, various sharing platters, small plates (sautéed cauliflower with capers, mackerel and chive pâté), and mains ranging from poached chicken and lovage salad to beef and rhubarb stew with spinach.
