Occupying an enviable position amidst the overstated grandeur of the British Museum’s Great Court, this Benugo-run restaurant sits happily beneath the building’s impressive domed glass roof. Thanks
to some clever planning, the space has an almost-serene vibe very different to the attraction’s inevitable bustle, helped by accomplished service that is speedy but not rushed. The menu also
deviates from the please-all, cash-cow options you might expect: prawn ceviche is given a vibrant kick with generous amounts of fresh lime and spikes of hot red chilli, while chicken ‘saltimbocca’
shows off pleasingly succulent meat crowned by a shard of crisp jamón. Staff scoop plump marinated olives from jars and carve legs of ham from the central bar, and a range of sherries tagged onto
the wine list also reinforces the venue’s underplayed Hispanic theme. A boon in this tourist-trap part of town.
At the end of 2013 the restaurant underwent a significant refurbishment which took three months. I hadn't visited the old restaurant, but apparently the redesign was to make the restaurant more welcoming to visitors. It now boasts an open kitchen and a charcuterie counter in the centre of the restaurant and is run by Benugo.Although there is an a la carte menu, our package included a Colombian inspired lunch from a set menu.There were three choices for each course.
