The Hawksmoor team have dipped their toes into foodie Clerkenwell with Foxlow, a restaurant and bar on the site of short-lived
Scandinavian joint North Road. A raucous soundtrack blasts away in the buzzy white-walled dining room, while those wanting something quieter can head to a comfy booth in the calmer upstairs area.
Given the Hawksmoor connection, there’s steak on the menu – although Foxlow feels less brash, with a mixed, sociable crowd digging into various char-grilled and slow-smoked dishes. Fish is an ideal
starting point, be it fresh, zingy Brixham crab with devilled mayonnaise or punchy five-pepper squid, but mains steal the show: the 10-hour beef short-rib (with kimchi to offset the richness) and
eight-hour bacon rib with maple and chilli are exemplary. To finish, go for the decadent ‘Peanutella’ pud with soldiers or try one of the inspired cocktails.
What is on offer: Where the brilliant North Road once was a different but also brilliant restaurant has opened its doors (by the people behind the hugely successful Hawksmoor franchise). Foxlow specialises in less common cuts of meat and cooking these to perfection. All the meats we tried were delicious, as were most starters and desserts. If you’re looking to indulge in some serious meat cravings, want to try some uncommon cuts and don’t want to break the bank while doing so, then Foxlow is the place to go to...

Hawksmoor has done it again, here at Foxlow. The food has moved from the classic steakhouse to a more relaxed take on long slow cooked meats. The menu is simple and not complicated but yet everything so tempting. But the most alluring to me was the slow, long hour cooking of two types of meat: pork and beef. There are nibbles as well such as the mama ghanouj with sourdough bread (£3.5)...

Foxlow is the new restaurant from the guys behind Hawksmoor. Although steak is also on the menu here, the emphasis is on less common cuts of meat. A salad bar serving a jewelled array of nut-studded choices suggests that Foxlow is a less visceral alternative to your usual steakhouse. Peppery squid to start is effervescent with chilli and lime. The batter is delicate whilst the squid itself is soft and giving.Delicacy is surrendered to stature with the next course. A ten hour beef shortrib is one of the biggest cuts of meat I have ever been presented with. This mammoth hunk of slow-smoked meat is served on a bone of pre-historic proportions. The beef is veined with softened fat and falls off the bone in neat layers. The cabbage kimchi it is served with kicks the meat up a notch with a pickled chilli frisson. A sauce would improve the dish, but on a whole it still pleases...

Foxlow is the latest venture from the guys behind Hawksmoor steakhouses and it’s based in St John Street, Farringdon on the former site of Michelin starred North Road – I was gutted when that closed!Gone were the previous stark white walls and instead it was a very homely affair; beautifully done out. We were seated upstairs avoiding the buzzy downstairs area complete with self service salad bar...

The Hawksmoor that’s not a HawksmoorFoxlow is the latest restaurant from the guys behind the Hawksmoor mini-chain of steakhouses, but it tries to be different by concentrating on meats other than steak. I say ‘tries’ quite deliberately, as you can still order various cuts of steak at Foxlow. Even if this wasn’t the case, Foxlow’s non-Hawksmoor branding is still a little puzzling as the various Hawksmoor restaurants haven’t been afraid to serve dishes other than steak. The short menu is nothing if not straightforward though. The meats are divided up into two sections – smoked and grilled/roasted. If you want sides, salads, starters and desserts, there’s a choice of around half a dozen of each...

When we heard the men behind Hawksmoor, Will Beckett and Huw Gott were opening Foxlow – a new ‘neighbourhood’ restaurant, we immediately put it right high up on ‘The List’. The next piece of news to follow was that they would be offering slow-smoked meats and their supplier would be Ginger Pig, this catapulted it to the very top. In their usual style they offered 50% off during the preview days so we got in there quick. Yes we do prefer to let new places find their feet, but hey, this is by the Hawksmoor boys, it didn’t feel as necessary. Plus the 50% off offer was too good to resist...
