Square Meal Review of Dishoom Shoreditch ?

‘A big step up from Brick Lane’ is how one reader describes the delights of Dishoom, a fun-loving, colonial-style Indian with ‘a touch of industrial Shoreditch disarray’. Like the Covent Garden original, it aims to replicate Bombay’s Irani cafés, although it feels buzzier and more enticing than its theatreland sibling – especially with the addition of an airy no-bookings veranda out front. The all-day menu invites sharing and picking, whether it’s flavour-packed lamb samosas, whopping char-grilled masala prawns, smoky ‘gunpowder’ potatoes, a biryani or a juicy slow-cooked lamb ‘raan’ bun from the specials list. To drink, pints of Dishoom’s own IPA (brewed in Hackney) fit the bill and the Asian-themed cocktails are very good – or you could opt for one of the refreshing chais, lassis and coolers. ‘Friendly and unfussy’ service tops off a Shoreditch winner.

  1. Dishoom has been on my go-to list ever since I heard about the Bombay café. Being Indian, the joy of hearing about good, traditional Indian food excites me but there was just never a good opportunity to visit the restaurant.

    Luckily enough, the day finally arrived when we decided to bite the bullet and have a relaxed lunch hour imagining that we were somewhere further away from London.

    The Shoreditch branch of Dishoom is in one word, stunning. We chose to eat in the verandah outside which was incredibly cosy and homely...

    A Lot of Chop :: Dishoom Shoreditch

    Despite having more curry houses per capita than any other part of London, Brick Lane is strangely one of the hardest parts of London to find really good quality Indian (/ Bengali, Bangladeshi, Pakistani) food.

    You can either order takeaway from Holy Cow or go to Tayabs or Needoo Grill in Whitechappel for really good value Indian food. Brick lane is a brilliant place, if a bit Lance Armstrong, but every curry I’ve had on Brick Lane has been pretty rank...

  1. This could have been an amazing meal and looks wise Dishoom is a pretty cool little venue in my books. Eating out on the veranda when the sun's out was a delight but the whole experience left me wanting sadly.

    The food was almost spot on but one or two things just made me think they could try a little harder. The idea of Cheesey naan and the house dhal was too good not to try.

    The naan was actually pretty special, light flaky bread filled with melted cheddar. The house dhal though was surprisingly bland and put together it just reminded me of baked beans on toast...

  1. To be honest, when I heard Dishoom were opening a new restaurant in Shoreditch I wasn’t as excited as I hoped to be. Basically Shoreditch is not my kind of place, a bit too young, noisy and trendy for me. I was hoping they’d open somewhere else, Spitalfields or Smithfield perhaps, anywhere else that begins with an S.

    However from the moment we walked through those huge gates on Boundary Street and up through the outside terrace we were smitten. This isn’t the Shoreditch that makes me want to flee to the comfort and sanctuary of my own home, this is actually quite calm, buzzy but not too much. Plus this is...

    inher30s :: A Dishoom Brunch… Shoreditch

    A Sunday shopping spree in Spitalfields market requires sustenance and where better to begin the day than brunching at one of my favourite spots – Dishoom

    I’ve previously been to Dishoom in Covent Garden and this outpost has the advantage of a large outdoor courtyard – all the better for a sunny brunch...
