As you might expect from the name, this neighbourhood restaurant hard by Newark Castle aims to celebrate the food and culture of the regions bordering the ‘blue Danube’ as it wends its way through
Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and beyond. The kitchen casts its net wide, taking in the likes of goulash, wiener schnitzel, Transylvanian steak with ‘Dracula’s special red sauce’ and
homemade frickadellen (large meatballs) with pickled peppers, gherkins, beetroot and mushrooms, ahead of apple and almond tart or lemon and lime gâteau. To drink, wines from the region are
supported by some esoteric beers including Krombacher Pils and Kloster Scheyern Dunkel. Fixed-price lunches (Fri-Sat) offer great value, and the Danube is also known for its afternoon teas
(including a version aimed at chocoholics).
