Standing grand and proud in the old Berkshire Council buildings, the Forbury Hotel conveys a sense of fun over formality with its bright colour schemes and quirky contemporary art. There’s a
similar vibe in its basement cocktail bar, where panelled glass displays, secluded enclave seating and architrave ceilings add a sense of distinction to its seriously up-to-date drinks offering.
Despite an exhaustive list of classics, tasteful creativity defines the mixology here: a dark and stormy, for example, is remade as Baron Samdi – its rum flamed in cinnamon at the bar, then mixed
with honey, lime and ginger beer. Seasonal specials showcase a single spirit such as Monkey Shoulder whisky, which might appear long and light with pineapple juice and lemon, or as a flambéed
after-dinner drink with coffee beans and chocolate liqueur – handy, given that space is shared with Forbury’s smart restaurant.
