Square Meal Review of Café Spice Namasté ?

Swagged curtains, bold colours and high ceilings add a certain Bollywood dash to the clean-lined simplicity of Cyrus Todiwala’s esteemed modern Indian, where the culinary traditions of Britain and Asia meet and mingle to intriguing effect. Poppadums come with commendable homemade pickles, before the kitchen spreads its wings – delivering baby squid rings in fiery Goan piri-piri masala, traditional dosas, tandoori salmon marinated in Parsee-style green chutney, and some east-west crossovers such as slow-cooked shepherd’s pie topped with cumin-flavoured mash. Despite its reputation and longevity, recent reports suggest that Namaste is going through a ‘shockingly bad’ patch, with food ‘no better than your local takeaway’ and a distinct chill in the lofty dining room. That said, polite, helpful staff do their best, and the cosmopolitan wine list’s food-matching possibilities are well worth considering; alternatively, try a shot of red-chilli mojito.
