Now into its third decade, the good-value Barcelona Tapas mini-chain has undoubtedly played its part in establishing Spanish cuisine in the capital. This branch isn’t the easiest to find, but once
you’re in, order a glass of fino with some salted almonds and marvel at the colourful decor, dramatic tiles and funky mosaics that light up this otherwise grey neighbourhood. Food-wise, don’t
expect a wacky take on tapas; instead, the kitchen deals in top-notch jamón and cheese, as well as ‘uniformly tasty’ staples such as slow-cooked beef meatballs, spicy paprika-infused pork, salt-cod
fritters and deep-fried gambas. A trio of set menus provide a good cross-section or you can share a generous paella, all delivered by ‘prompt, friendly, unobtrusive’ staff. Half-price beer and
sangria from 5 to 7pm is a further plus. It’s ‘British Catalonia’, concludes one fan.
