For years, Avenue’s glamorously clinical, white-walled dining room was a regular haunt of Mayfair’s blue-bloods, antique dealers and shoppers looking for eclectic, Brit-accented food and smart
drinks. Now it’s re-emerged as an all-American joint – although it still exudes an arty vibe, with exhibits and sculptural installations from new kids on the block. A unique chandelier fashioned
from wine glasses takes centre stage in the dining room, while the menu offers contemporary US dishes ranging from clam chowder served in sourdough with littleneck clams and crumbled bay crackers
to sharing plates from the Josper grill – perhaps ‘KC suckling pig butt’ with spiced bacon, pecan cabbage, cinder potato and sour cream. The 200-bin wine list focuses on American and Old World
classics, with a Coravin system allowing diners to sample prestige wines by the glass or ‘pail’.
Lured by an Amex offer of £20 discount on over £100 spent at D&D restaurants, I made my way to @venue, a short walk from either Piccadilly Circus or Green Park station. Having read overall quite good reviews (though mostly about business lunches), I must conclude that I was disappointed. Even with a £20, this dinner wasn’t worth it (£154.21 after discount for 3 people, 2 dishes each and two glasses of wine).Of all the choices, my game meat selections were definitely not to recommend...

I decided to book the Avenue Restaurant and Bar, which is about a 10 minute walk from Piccadilly Circus. As we entered, the interior felt slightly imposing and I wasn’t sure if I was fancy enough to be eating here. However, the service was so friendly that we felt at ease immediately, as they took our coats and bags and showed us to our table. We opted for their ‘Summer in St James’ menu, which was good value at £19.50 for two courses and a glass of prosecco (my favourite drink, summer or winter!).Our waiter opened with a friendly ‘Hello’, and when we smiled at him, he followed up with ‘Is it me you’re looking for?’ This immediately broke the ice as he started explaining the items on the menu to us.
