Occupying the former site of Gallic favourite Morgan M, Assiette Anglaise continues the local tradition of serving up great French food in a friendly neighbourhood setting. Bringing the classic
bistro look bang up to date, the buzzy interior is decked out with pale grey walls, modern art and white-topped tables, although the menu is full of bourgeois evergreens – from crispy frog’s legs
with punchy tomato sauce to a generous bouillabaisse and exemplary créme caramel served with buttery almond biscuits. Elsewhere, a chunky textured rabbit and pistachio terrine delivers intense
rustic flavours, and international influences creep into a dish of tender soy-glazed slow-cooked pork belly, served with salt-and-vinegar cabbage and a side of crisp garlic and thyme fries. The
short all-French wine list from top supplier Les Caves de Pyrène is an added attraction, alongside classic cocktails and locally brewed beers.
Just a few minutes walk away from the hustle and bustle of Highbury and Islington station and the madness that is Upper Street, is possibly one of the best little independent restaurants that we have visited for a long time. Assiette Anglaise is a charming understated proper neighbourhood restaurant, where Saff remembers Morgan M being from her north London days. Now my French isn’t very good, hence my lowly D grade CSE, so sometimes I feel a little intimidated by the menus in French establishments. But at Assiette Anglaise I really needn’t have worried, we felt relaxed and at ease as soon as we walked through the door. I always like to look up the translation of restaurant names, so I punched in Assiette Anglaise into Google to see what would pop up. Assiette – a plate or a course of a meal, that makes sense. Assiette Anglaise – cold meats!...

I had a fantastic lunch last week at Assiette Anglaise, a relatively new restaurant for Highbury and a welcome one indeed! It’s is a fine little neighbourhood brasserie which locals should be proud to call their own. Everybody else? This all day eatery’s only a short stroll away from Highbury and Islington Station (and is just about as close to Holloway Road and Caledonian Road stations too). The delighful meal I had was certainly worth the time I spent on public transport to get there...
