Slick, sexy and ‘good for a date night’ – it’s all about the atmosphere at this moody Japanese sibling of Aqua Nueva. Bypass the moneyed hordes clamouring for frisky fusion cocktails in the
pulsating bar to reach the glamorous, red-toned dining room with its vast central sushi counter and well-spaced tables throbbing to the same clubby beat. Highly competent staff take first-timers
through the menu dish by dish, recommending the likes of duck breast and baby-leek yakitori, stickily charred robata-grilled black cod with yuzu curd, suckling pork belly with eel, and flashily
presented, ‘high-quality’ delicacies from the sushi and sashimi section. Aqua Kyoto is serious about business and pleasure, with the ‘huge’ bonus of a heated terrace for smokers – just make sure
you’re not picking up the wallet-challenging tab.
The 5th floor on Regent Street? Sounds incredibly fancy. In reality, the view isn’t great, as all the buildings around are the same height, and it was obviously too cold to sit outside. Having said that, the inside was absolutely beautiful. I loved how we could observe the sushi chefs at work, and the grill was very impressive (although not as much as the very effective extractor fan above it!).Now the food. Wow. All 4 of us actually ordered the same thing ( the choice was very limited, with 2 choices for course 1, and 3 choices for course 2). The presentation, however, was impeccable. The sushi tasted so fresh, and it made me ashamed of all those times I hit up Wasabi to satisfy my sushi cravings. It’s far better to skip that a few times, and save that money to have really nice sushi here!...

What with the hugely successful openings of Aqua Shard and Hutong in the Shard building it’s easy to forget that Aqua also have two existing restaurants on the fifth floor of the former Dickins and Jones department store opposite the Palladium theatre. There’s Aqua Nueva, a contemporary Spanish restaurant and Aqua Kyoto, which offers Japanese fare. The latter has recently acquired a new head chef and I was kindly invited along to try some of the new dishes on offer...

Aqua Kyoto is an Asian fusion restaurant with sister restaurants in Hong Kong and in Dubai. In the next few months a new one will open at the Shard – watch this space. The restaurant is made up of tables surrounding the large chef’s station, which is where Japanese chefs prepare fresh sushi with extreme skill. This perfect square of a station is strikingly large and is surrounded by tables. We were actually seated on the chefs station so had a perfect view of the sushi making in action...
