‘Art for art’s sake; money for God’s sake’ sang 10CC – it might be the theme for D&D London’s artfully laid-back boutique City hotel with its nods to nearby Spitalfields’ role as the cradle of
Brit-art. By hotel standards, £9.50 isn’t a lot to pay for a decent cocktail in its three drinking spaces, of which the monochrome chic ‘garden bar’ will be the place to frequent come clement
weather. The games room is named after Bond villain Le Chiffre, and there’s also a bit of a spy theme going on with the drinks: hammer & sickle; 007’s Vesper martini, and ‘the spy who loved me’
(Bacardi Superior, honey, raspberry and lime). Bar snacks encompass Scotch eggs, mini burgers, crab on toast, fishcakes and rarebit ‘soldiers’, while upbeat staff are dressed in hipster uniforms
that recall Aeroflot stewards circa Moonraker.
