SquareMeal Review of 1701

The beautiful synagogue, in whose lee 1701 shelters, was built for London’s Spanish and Portuguese Jews, but the eclectic menu here attests to the tantalising diversity of ‘one of the world’s most nomadic cuisines’. The “superb” and “very modern” kosher food draws widely – on Sephardi, Mizrahi and Ashkenazi, Arabian and Persian roots, in addition to modern Israeli fusion cooking. The resulting dishes embrace the likes of braised lamb-neck pastilla from Morocco, a reworked gefilte fish with wild sea bass mousseline (which has its origins in Germany), and palau Kabuli: a rice dish from the Afghan tradition, with pan-fried duck breast and confit leg. Round off a meal with central European fruit soup or thoroughly Viennese sachertorte. The interesting wine list sources mevushal (kosher) bottles from Israel and elsewhere. Service is “impeccable”; the dining room smart and stylish.

1701 was the year the adjacent synagogue was built. The restaurant does a very modern take on Jewish staples from around the world and is a revelation. The décor is plain, the atmosphere respectful (the clientèle is becoming broader as the secret gets out) and the food is superb. The restaurant wasn't too busy and service was impeccable, both knowledgeable and friendly. For starters we had a take on pastrami ( a New York delicacy) with tiny cauliflower florets and hazelnuts and my guest had pastilla, that's confit pigeon in filo pastry ( a Morroccan speciality). Mains were deep fried fish with artichoke and for me a sous vide duck with bok choy, a little sauce, some piquant pumpkin relish and tiny circles of sticky rice adorned with confit duck – incredible and as good a dish as any restaurant that I have been to. As it was lunchtime we just went for a water though there is enough variety in the wine list for most tastes (and they do wine by the glass). And the best bit… the bill including service and an excellent amuse bouche of borscht with a horseradish foam … was just under £100. My only concern in writing this review is that word will get out! If you have time beforehand allow half an hour or more for a tour of the synagogue which is fascinating (modest charge for this and men are provided with a kippah or skull cap).

What an experience!
I went to Restaurant 1701 for lunch this week and I cannot begin to describe what a wonderful experience it was. The service is impeccable as soon as you walk in until the moment you leave. The food was delicious and each course was beautifully presented. The waiters were also very helpful in explaining the each dish when it was served. I had the braised lamb neck in phyllo pastry to start followed by the duck breast for the main course. For dessert I had the semolina cake. Each dish was divine in its taste and so beautifully presented. The atmosphere and ambience of the restaurant is beautiful, the decor is very classy and the whole experience is added to by the outstanding service. All in all a great experience, I will definitely be going back and recommending to family and friends!
