The Viennese Ritz - What's New: International Venues The Viennese Ritz

Two splendid 19th-century palaces have come together in the centre of Vienna’s old town to create the new Ritz Carlton, opening this summer. The five-star hotel will have six function rooms ranging from the stand-out Palais 1, which looks out over the Viennese Ringstrasse and holds up to 30 guests, to the larger ballroom. For meetings there are two boardrooms, each of which holds up to 14 delegates. An added coup is the on-site parking.

STRIKING waterfront locations are always popular and Amsterdam has gained a treat in the form of the Eye Film Institute Netherlands. The four screening rooms seat between 67 and 315, and there are three boardrooms and 1,200 sq m of exhibition space, so Eye is particularly suited for presentations. Directly across from the city’s Central Station, it can be accessed by a free 24-hour ferry.

If paintballing doesn’t quite cut it, organisers may be interested in Machine Guns Vegas, opening this month in the US’ infamous Sin City. The venue offers a range of themed packages, allowing guests the chance to fire a variety of guns in a safe, alcohol-free environment. One of the London’s most highly regarded Indian restaurants is popping up in New York’s fashionable Upper East Side in February. Cinnamon Club’s Executive chef Vivek Singh has chosen to set up shop in foodie’s favourite Desmond’s NYC. The owners of the multi-award-winning Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa, Switzerland, have been doing a spot of decorating. Acclaimed interior designer Carlo Rampazzi has given the ground floor a fresh look, including a new bar & restaurant. Star attraction, though, is the smokers’ lounge, with walls covered in tobacco leaves. The first conference hotel in Istria, Croatia, has just opened its doors. The ultra-stylish Hotel Lone, which also happens to be Croatia’s first member of Design Hotels, sits on the edge of a forest and is just yards from the sea. There are seven meeting and conference rooms, the largest of which can seat 600. In conjunction with nearby venues, it can accommodate up to 3,000 delegates. Tel: 00385 52 632 000.

If you want to wine and dine a small group in Amsterdam, Michelin-starred Restaurant Vinkeles at The Dylan hotel is the default choice. Now executive chef Dennis Kuipers’ has launched an exclusive dining experience for four-to-six guests on a 19th-century wooden salon boat, Vinkeles on the Water. Diners get to enjoy Champagne & canapés before tucking into a six-course meal prepared by Kuipers himself, with wines chosen by sommelier Bart Dignum. A big bang at Macau Galaxy

Macau’s hotel scene recently got a boost with a Banyan Tree in the just-opened Galaxy Macau ‘entertainment resort’; now it gets a neighbour in the shape of Hotel Okura Macau. The 488-bedroom property has six function rooms on the 28th floor, the largest of which, Orchid, can accommodate up to 180 theatre-style or 200 for cocktails (and can be divided into three smaller rooms if need be). Galaxy Macau is well-located, too: the airport’s and the Maritime Ferry terminal are both under 20 minutes’ drive.

Following a two-year renovation, Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga’s 16th-century Palacio de Villalón is once again open and ready for business. The gallery, with artworks by Old Masters through to 19th-century giants such as Van Gogh, can be hired exclusively as a glamorous venue for cocktail parties, press launches or corporate events. The Garden Theatre can seat up to 500 guests, and in summer will be staging musical extravaganzas at no charge for Sani guests. Off-season it can be hired for presentations and will add another string to the resort’s extensive corporate facilities, which are suitable for groups of up to 700 delegates.

Dolce Hotels & Resorts is offering a 15% discount on group room rates, corporate meetings and events. Its ‘Zen Some’ promotion is available at any of Dolce’s 27 European and North American properties, for events scheduled till the end of February 2012. Dolce is a bit of an specialist in the field – it hosts 30,000 events a year across its various hotels, and does a nice line in customised menus. Ritz-Carlton hits new high - What's New: International Venues Ritz-Carlton hits new high

It seems that barely a day goes by without a new Ritz-Carlton hotel opening its doors. The latest still managed to create a stir, though. Occupying floors 102 to 118 of the International Commerce Centre, the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong is the world’s highest hotel. There are six dining areas including The Chocolate Library (a chocolate themed lounge) and Ozone, a contemporary restaurant and bar on the 118th floor. Events space includes the 930m sq Diamond Ballroom and four separate meeting rooms.

April sees the opening of Ian Shrager’s new Istanbul Edition, in the Levent neighbourhood. The 13-storey tower (billed as an ‘Urban Resort’) has a variety of different options for functions, including flexible meeting studios, a Private Screening Room and a 3,000sq ft events space. There’s also a beautiful Gold Bar, inspired by traditional Turkish tea rooms. However, we’d grab the huge Penthouse for a cocktail party, with its unrivalled views of the city.

New York’s SoHo district, if you didn’t already know, is a happening place. Hot on the heels of the just-opened James hotel comes the Mondrain SoHo. Its quirky design is inspired by Jean Coucteau’s 1946 movie, La Belle et le Bête, though the nightclub, Mister H, has more of a 1930s Shanghai bar feel. There are 270 rooms, several of which have marble foyer and bar areas for entertaining, though the four suites are even better suited for events. We’d grab the 25th-floor Penthouse – one of its two large terraces has great views of the Empire State Building. For larger dos, consider the Gallery, which can take 72 banqueting-style or 125 for cocktails, and the Gallery Terrace (also 125 standing).

The latest addition to New York’s hotel scene is the James, on the corner of Thompson & Grand in ever-fashionable SoHo. Anyone who’s stayed at the original James in Chicago will know what to expect: supremely stylish décor, first-rate food & cocktails & achingly cool works by local artists. As well as a rooftop pool deck & bar, there are a few good options for meetings & events, including the Garden Terrace (up to 60 standing), the Studio (20 sitting down) & the 16th-floor Penthouse Loft, designed by Piet Boon, with views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges (up to 20 for cocktails).

Hot on the heels of its new Dubai hotel, the Ritz-Carlton group has opened a new property in Toronto – its first in Canada. Each of its 267 rooms and suites has floor-to-ceiling windows (to take advantage of unimpeded views of the city or lake) and have been decorated with African Anigre wood and Portuguese Estremoz marble. There are a variety of events spaces, including the city’s largest ballroom (for up to 600 guests), a pre-function area overlooking Metro Hall Park, and several meeting rooms, all with natural light.

Ritz Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre - What's New: International Venues Ritz Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre

Dubai’s latest hotel offering is the 341-room Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre, which opened its doors last month. As the only hotel directly linked to the DIFC, the Ritz-Carlton (Dubai’s second) has been designed to cater for just about any meeting or event. The 2,574m sq of function space includes the 1,400m sq Samaya Ballroom, which can be divided into four smaller spaces, and has eight break-out rooms that can be hired individually. Glamorous touches include a 30m-tall, 3,000-bottle wine wall in the bar, No. 5, and a 10-storey outside waterfall cascading into the courtyard.

The latest Soho House was officially launched on 11 October on the ocean front at Miami’s Mid Beach. Venues & Events was among the first to visit the Soho Beach House Miami pre-opening and we’re so excited about how great it looks, we’ll be running a big photo spread in our autumn magazine (register here for a free subscribtion or look out for the digi-mag on Twitter). Unusually for a private member’s club, there’s masses of event space, including a rooftop bar, screening room & PDR with views.

The Waterhouse at South Bund Opens

Shanghai has a stylish new hotel and event space - and that's not all: The Waterhouse at South Bund, a 19-bedroom boutique hotel in Shanghai’s historic Shiliupu dockyard district, is also the site of chef Jason Atherton’s new venture, Table No 1 by Jason Atherton. The culinary team also includes resident chef Scott Melvin, who managed kitchens at maze and maze grill, as well as the sous-chef and pastry chef from the same restaurant. Table No 1, which serves contemporary European cuisine, has two private dining areas, but if you’re looking for more space, check out the adjoining event space. The 8,000sq foot multi-purpose venue, a former warehouse, has a flexible layout and capacity for up to 800 guests. Recent high profile functions include the Shanghai Tang 2009 autumn/winter fashion show, Hong Kong film director Wong Kar Wai’s star-studded private party and the launch of International Home Décor & Design.

Guoman Hotels is expanding east: the 442-bedroom Guoman Shanghai which opened on 1 June, joins the four London outposts. The five-star hotel is arranged over 26 floors, two of them dedicated to Eastern-inspired restaurants and bars. There’s a touch of British indulgence in the fleet of Guoman-operated black cabs, which are on hand to transport guests round the city. The property is geared up for large-scale events, too – the Ballroom seats up to 750 theatre-style and there are 11 state-of-art conference rooms.

Are you organising an event Stateside? Then check out the latest Trump offering, Trump SoHo New York, due to open in March. The 46-story, 391-room tower soars above Spring Street, providing vertigo-inducing views from its floor to ceiling windows. There will be 12,000sq ft of venue space, including the aptly named SoHi on the 46th floor, which will host cocktail receptions of up to 150, the 3,900sq ft SoHo Ballroom and the 2020sq ft Hudson Square Ballroom with private covered terrace.

Moving out of its cosy London comfort zone, Firmdale Hotels has launched its first international property, in New York. The 86-bedroom Crosby Street Hotel (tel: 001 212 226 6400) is down a quiet cobbled street in SoHo and events facilities are not dissimilar to its UK counterparts: a private basement screening room seating 99, with luxurious leather seating, joined by three private event rooms named after well-known local streets Lafayette, Prince and Spring. The entire floor can be hired exclusively for up to 300.

Red Carnation's luxury five-star Geneva property, Hotel d'Angleterre (tel: 00 41 22 906 5555) has flown in five chefs from Tamarind for a three-week Indian dining extravaganza in the hotel's Windows Restaurant. The good news is that the Tamarind team will also cater for private events at the hotel on request until 15 August.

The new Melbourne Convention Centre (tel: 00 61 3 9235 8000) opens in July on the site of the existing exhibition centre. The new build will be the first (and only) ‘6 Star Green Star’ eco-friendly convention centre in the world, comprising 32 meeting rooms, a grand ballroom, an entry-level foyer for 8,400 guests and a state-of-the-art 5,000-seater plenary hall that can be divided into three self-contained theatres. Melbourne’s Convention and Visitors Bureau has also just been named Australia’s top convention bureau, so all events in the city are in safe hands!

The 257-bedroom hotel adopts the same quirky approach to hospitality as its London counterpart, with art installations and impromptu live music performances. A 150-capacity Panorama Ballroom has 2,730sq ft of space and there's the opportunity to hire the roof terrace alongside it. Four studios hold between 10 and 20 people for smaller meetings.

The Buddha Bar brand has opened its first hotel in Prague. The boutique five star is as stylish as you'd expect, situated in a historic building just off the Old Town Square. The hotel is compact, with 36 bedrooms and three suites; though there are no meeting rooms as such, the Siddharta Café, with 100 covers, or the Buddha Bar restaurant (150 covers) and mezzanine bar (100 capacity), can be privately hired, as can the suites for smaller events for 5-6. Budapest will be the next Buddha hotel destination in 2010.

Richard Corrigan is going back to his roots and has just opened a Dublin branch of Bentley's (tel: 00 353 1 638 3939) in his native Ireland. The exclusive oyster bar and grill is divided into a restaurant (available for exclusive lunch hire for 75) and Aviator Lounge, also available for private hire and seating up to 100 for drinks and 40 for dinner. The Georgian building, which used to be Brownes Townhouse, also houses a private dining room for up to 60 and ten bedrooms.
