London calling: John Burton-Race

john-burton-race.jpgJohn Burton-Race is to open his first London restaurant for 12 years. The New Angel in Notting Hill’s Chepstow Place is set to open on 7 May and it shares the same name as his previous venture in Devon.

The 54-cover restaurant will serve a modern European menu based on British produce, and will have a French-led wine list. There will also be a small bar area. Burton-Race will take on the role of executive chef, while long-time colleague Stephen Humphries, who has also worked at Le Gavroche, has been named head chef.

In a statement, Burton-Race said: “The restaurant scene in London just gets better and better, and I am thrilled to be returning to the capital at such an exciting time.”

Burton-Race was sous chef at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons before opening his own restaurant L’Ortolan in Berkshire in 1986 and winning two Michelin stars. He achieved the same accolade in 2000 when he opened JBR restaurant in the Landmark Hotel.

Following a break from the restaurant industry and a move into television work, he launched The New Angel in Devon, in 2004 where he held one Michelin star until his departure in 2010. More recently, he has been seen on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and several other reality TV shows.

A dinner-only soft launch at The New Angel is scheduled from 22-26 April, before extending to lunch from 28 April - 3 May and the official launch, set for 7 May.
