What is the most important factor when booking a venue for a Christmas party?

Wentworth: on course for business

1108_Wentworth_Clubhouse_Terraceresize.jpgWhen Bruce Forsyth steps out of his buggy after an early-morning round and presses palms with three-time Major winner Ernie Els in the car park, you know you’re in good company.

The two friends are regulars at Wentworth, which boasts countless stars of stage, screen and green among its ranks of members. It’s the exclusivity of the Surrey course that holds the allure for golf fans and celebrities alike. From the manicured grounds to the castle-esque clubhouse, everything about the venue screams impact.

Generally the reserve of members, the only way non-paid-up golfers can get into the three-course club is through a corporate golf day or with the venue’s latest offering: the Golf and Spa packages. There is, of course, the option of entering the annual BMW PGA Championship in May, but those currently not on the European Tour need not apply.

While corporate events offer clients the opportunity to take the course exclusively for a day, the Golf and Spa packages are a more intimate, designed for groups of between two and 10, catering for partners in the process.

It’s the value that’s bringing small parties in their droves. A round of golf, overnight stay, dinner and breakfast is available from £400 for two. While the men are out on the fairways talking business or catching up, non-golfing ladies are entitled to 85 minutes’ worth of treatments in the on-site spa. Usually, just to hit a few balls on the course will set a punter back in excess of £100.

1108_Wentworth_18th_-_mid_(2).jpgGuests can choose to play one of three courses. The Edinburgh – the most recent addition to the estate, opening in 1990 – is great for longer hitters, with big landing zones and wide fairwarys; ideal for a club golfer. The East – Wentworth’s oldest – is popular among the members, with plenty of elevated tees affording gorgeous views of the surrounding estate. The West Course – remodelled by Els in 2010 – is one of the most picturesque and challenging courses in the world. It comes with a maximum handicap of 18 for good reason. Plenty of bunkers team with undulating fairways and some of the most unforgiving greens in the business.

Access to the health club is also built in with the Golf and Spa packages. No fewer than 17 tennis courts are available, while the gym has the most advanced machines aound. So, after allowing your guest to beat you on course and trump you at tennis, when you shake hands in the car park the following morning, it’s going to be a pretty sure bet that business will be secured for next year.

Wentworth Club Bedroom - Bedroom 1105_Wentworth_Club_Bedroom.jpgThe Wentworth Clubhouse is also home to 10 high-spec bedrooms, eight of which were refurbished in early 2011. The rooms, coupled with a redesign of The Grill restaurant, give the space a real five-star feel. The Golf and Spa packages give guests access to all, from dinner in the restaurant to a stay in one of the top-notch bedrooms. For someone looking to treat a small group of clients, it’s spot-on.

Club owner, Caprice Holdings impresario Richard Caring, has clearly looked to bring a bit of West End glitz to the estate. Regulars at his London restaurants will recognise plenty along the way. The menu has tinges of The Ivy, flashes from Scott’s and more than a tip of the hat to Daphne’s (full restaurant review).
