Clip on and hang tight: it’s time to conquer London’s coolest climbing wall
Words: Millie Milliken Photos: Sam Walton
They’ve really gone to town with the mountaineering theme for Up at The O2. Signing in at ‘Base Camp’, our enthusiastic leader Ben shows us an OTT (but funny) briefing video before introducing us to the requisite climbing gear. Kitted out with jumpsuits, harnesses and Ecco trekking shoes, we look like a cross between explorers and an off-duty bomb disposal team. Pretty special.
Then, the ascent. Having mastered our safety leads, we begin up the springy, steep first part of the climb, which soon eases as the roof begins to curve. The time allotted for each team is 90 minutes, which is ample considering we reach the 52m summit inside half an hour. It gives us opportunity to take in the full-compass panoramas; views that stretch for 30 miles in any direction. After the obligatory photos and triumphant back-slapping, we make our way down the other side feeling, frankly, rather proud of ourselves. It’s not every day you get to climb over one of London’s iconic buildings – without getting arrested.
Up at The O2 costs £25pp. Other packages include Rock the Roof, Grand Exhibition, Action Adventure, Night Climb and Blue Hat, available for groups of up to 15.
