The Savoy reopens

Somewhere back in the mists of time (2007, to be precise), The Savoy closed for a supposed 12-month refurbishment. Twelve months soon became 18, which itself then doubled. Now, three years down the line, the impressive Strand hotel has reopened, dubbing its new facelift as ‘the most ambitious hotel restoration in British history’. It certainly looks the part, with the glamorous art deco interiors retained, restored and coupled with 21st-century additions, and with it comes a host of new bars and restaurants.

Gordon Ramsay’s return to The Savoy Grill – previously run by best-friend-turned-competitor Marcus Wareing, and now under the control of Stuart Gillies – would have stolen the headlines had it opened on time. However, with its launch now delayed to late November, the River Restaurant (pictured, below) looks set to be the brief, early-doors star of the show, beside restored drinking hole The American Bar and newcomer the Beaufort Bar (pictured, right):

The American Bar: Revered as the granddaddy of all cocktail bars, enjoy cocktails from some very capable mixologists and foot-tapping jazz by a live pianist, seven days a week.

River Restaurant: Modern French restaurant dealing in dishes such as slow-poached monkfish and pork rillette tortellini served with thyme & Chardonnay gelée.

Beaufort Bar: Occupying the old cabaret, expect rare Champagnes by the glass and decadent punches served in absinthe fountains at guests’ tables.
