How did the Elizabethans entertain? by taking private box-style ‘Gentlemen’s Rooms’ at the theatre – which is one option on offer at Shakespeare’s Globe. More straightforward events can be held in the 120-capacity Balcony Room with views of river and theatre; the Underglobe can hold up to 450.

Doggetts Coat & Badge
Named after the world’s longest-established rowing race (Thames watermen first competed in 1715) this pub next to Blackfriars Bridge has four floors. Its Terrace Bar, with views of St Paul’s, has outdoor seating, a barbecue and bar, and can cater for 120. The third-floor Thomas Doggett Room has its own bar and suits sit-down meals for up to 100 or 140 for a stand-up reception.

Mermaid Conference & Events Centre
This former theatre turned mega event space has raked seating for 600 in the auditorium as well as boardroom and conference areas. Receptions for 300 can be held in the foyer and Bridge Bar and the Blackfriars and River Rooms can host dinners for up to 175.

Next to Tate Modern and facing St Paul’s, this modern pub makes the most of its views, with large windows and a sizeable patio. The indoor raised bar area can be reserved for parties of up to 40 guests.

Tate Modern Restaurant
Tate Modern Restaurant is a special event space for receptions of up to 350 or dinners for 150. Café 2 has the same capacity, while the balconies at the north and south ends of the Members’ Room make unusual locations for outdoor evening receptions.

Northbank, by Millennium Bridge, brought its impeccably sourced British food to the river in 2007. The booze line-up is hard to fault, too, ranging from New York cocktails to obscure ales. The bar, restaurant and terrace are available for hire, with a total capacity of 175 – barbecues are a particular strong suit.
