Winning reader review: Kevin P.

Even though it is now a little out of date (after executive chef Angela Hartnett bought Murano from Gordon Ramsay Holdings last month), Square Meal reader Kevin P's online review of Murano was, hands down, one of the best posted during the summer months. Short, to the point and with an excellent understanding of what makes Murano so appealing to diners, all mixed in with a sprinkling of wit, it thoroughly deserved to win our reader prize of a bottle of Louis Roederer Champagne and a £250 meal for two at a restaurant of your choice. "Don’t be put off by the Ramsay family associations – like Atherton when he was at Maze, this is definitely the home of Hartnett rather than the angry, craggy-faced headliner. Also, try and look past the strangely staid and emotionless dining room. It is the Death Eater of decor. It’s truly extraordinary how they’ve managed to suck all the life out of the room. But get beyond it, sit down, salivate over the menu and prepare for a treat. This is excellent, yet refreshingly ‘simple’ cooking. You don’t need a dictionary to translate every second menu option – you’ll just need a few extra belt holes, because if you manage to avoid ordering the full three courses then you’ve a stronger will than I have. From the pre-starter of excellent Italian hams and cheeses, through to the tuna carpaccio with pork belly, and the duck with beetroot gnocchi, right through to the stunning pistachio soufflé, this was a food journey I’d willingly take over and over again. Wines were good but definitely weighted towards the fatter-walleted patrons. All this place needs is for Angela Hartnett to impress her personality on the dining room as well as the food and there won’t be many better places to visit in London."
