This summer, as a continuation of its annual Wine List of the Year awards (held in association with Square Meal’s sister title Imbibe), Champagne house Louis Roederer has been encouraging Square Meal readers to share their favourite wine moments or wine-related stories – and giving away magnums of Louis Roederer Champagne for the best entries.
As always, the anecdotes flowed in: from a gentleman diner ‘haughtily’ asking a female member of staff to fetch the sommelier – with embarrassing consequences – to a perfectly matched dessert wine at Galvin La Chapelle and a memorable marriage proposal in Italy celebrated with a crisp – and unexpectedly delicious – bottle of Pinot Grigio.
However, the judges at Roederer chose a particularly amusing wine experience as the competition winner for summer, an anecdote that was submitted by Louise Robertson. James Samson, judge and Roederer spokesman, described Louise’s winning entry as, ‘a fun story that shows that taste can’t be bought…’
Here is the winning wine anecdote in full:
Eating lunch in The Ascot Grill at Royal Ascot a few years ago (before the refurb), our wine got muddled up with an adjoining table of young well-known footballers. By the time we pointed out the mistake they had already drunk our Chablis, while we had been served the house blanc plonk. The staff apologised profusely and shouted across, "We're getting you ladies a bottle of fizz!" When the promised bottle arrived, it was Asti Spumante – we didn't drink it, but we did laugh ourselves silly. We would have much preferred a decent bottle of Louis Roederer.
Congratulations to Louise, who wins a magnum of 2005 Louis Roederer. Our thanks go to Louis Roederer for sponsoring the competition – and to our readers, who have kept us thoroughly entertained with their tales.
Louis Roederer’s wine-list anecdote competition will continue throughout 2012, with a further magnum to be won in the autumn. At the end of the year, a case of six bottles of 2005 Louis Roederer will be awarded to the best overall wine moment – so get writing and watch this space!
