Michelin magic

World-famous skiing destination Courchevel comprises five resorts – Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1300 Le Praz, and La Tania – all located at different altitudes.

The resorts are studded with Michelin-starred chefs – some say there are more per square mile here than anywhere else in the world.

From the two-Michelin-starred gourmet heaven of Pierre Gagnaire’s Les Airelles, and Yannick Alléno’s Le 1947 at the Cheval Blanc hotel, to the refined regional dishes of Le Chabichou (all located in Courchevel 1850), visiting gourmands are spoilt for choice.

As for one-Michelin-starred restaurants, foodies can choose from Le Bateau Ivre, Le Kilimandjaro and Le Strato (all in Courchevel 1850), or head further down the valley to Azimut Restaurant, in the heart of the 1300 La Praz, and Le Farçon, in La Tania.

But it’s not just Courchevel’s restaurants that make the area a food lovers’ paradise; the most luxurious chalets spoil holidaymakers with a personal chef who cooks elegant multi-course meals each evening; just what the body needs before dipping into Courchevel’s après-ski scene. Such chalets are a hassle-free take on self-catering – with no shopping stress and no washing up to deal with at the end of the night.

At Kaluma Ski’s chalets, skiers are welcomed back from a day on the slopes with pre-dinner cocktails and canapés followed by a four-course dinner of restaurant-standard dishes such as sautéed chorizo in cider served with caramelised Savoie apples, or slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with anchovies and garlic, red wine jus, roasted pumpkin and red lentils. With dishes like these on tap in the comfort of your luxury chalet, there’s little need to race to book a restaurant table.

However, if you do brave the snow in search of a Michelin-starred experience, the staff at Kaluma Ski are on call to help you bag a booking at the restaurant of your choice. Established in 2003 by founders Andy Butterworth and Richard Lumb, this bespoke luxury ski-and-retreats specialist provides an on-demand concierge-style service to guests. The pair are also happy to recommend dining spots that are a cut above. Lumb’s top tip for lunch on the slopes is La Bouitte, in St Martin de Belleville, part of the Three Valleys ski area. ‘In terms of the whole package – atmosphere, service and food – La Bouitte is the best restaurant within a 100-mile radius,’ he says. ‘Many of our clients ski there, have lunch, then take a helicopter back to the resort.’
