Though their glory years were just after the Second World War, Pompey have seen a return to top-flight football in recent years, fuelled by investment from a brace of foreign owners. The club were in financial ruin when Serbian Milan Mandaric bought the club in 1998, but his takeover spurred the club on to surpass their bitter rivals Southampton as the best team on the south coast. Mandaric later sold his share in the club to Frenchman Alexandre Gaydamak and the club have continued to grow. Their Fratton Park home has an old-fashioned charm about it, but plans are afoot to redevelop the stadium.
