Handily placed a stone’s throw from Kelvingrove Art Gallery, this rollicking neighbourhood venue looks just the ticket: a chic interior of stripped stone and orange walls plays host to a gregarious crowd of chattering locals and families who are pleased to have such as cracker on their doorstep. Renowned for its thin-crusted, wood-fired pizzas, Firebird’s kitchen also rings the changes with a vibrant and eclectic bistro menu: sandwiches come filled with anything from serrano ham to falafel, while more filling dishes could include confit chicken wings with pickled celery and crumbled blue cheese, penne with hay-smoked mushrooms or rare-roasted hanger steak with thyme-pressed potato, Jerusalem artichokes and red wine jus. As for drinks, beers from renowned microbreweries appear at the curved wooden bar alongside premium spirits and cunningly crafted cocktails. Firebird also serves pizzas from its mobile Piaggio Ape van.
