Ugly Butterfly by Adam Handling doubles as a stunning coastal wedding venue, alongside being a top-tier restaurant. It is housed in the award-winning Carbis Bay Estate, which also offers luxurious accommodation for guests. The estate itself spans 125 acres, offering tranquil gardens, a spa, beach, heated pool and more. Adam Handling creates sumptuous wedding menus that everyone can enjoy, celebrating local, seasonal ingredients.
The restaurant features peerless vistas of the sea and sunsets thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. As such, you and your guests can watch the sun slip into the sea while sipping on cocktails at the bar. The cocktails have been carefully created to celebrate the restaurant’s surroundings, as well as sustainability. The fal-town, for example, uses oyster shell-infused Grey Goose vodka and foraged samphire from the surrounding coastline, while the wildflower mark two uses atsina stem and Cornish honey water, alongside calvados and Glenfiddich fire and cane whisky.
Ugly Butterfly can host up to 150 guests for a wedding ceremony or breakfast. The menu here changes regularly and wedding menus are tailored. You might see snacks like crispy duck with quince, baked potato with truffle or even caviar with waffles. Oysters are a common occurrence too, served crispy with mayo or more traditionally with shallot and chilli. Seafood is a staple here, so you might enjoy the likes of scallop with kohlrabi and kombu or gin-cured trout with sorrel and Cornish salted caviar as part of your meal.
Bubbly is an important part of any wedding our books, and is well taken care of at Ugly Butterfly. Try Adam’s own label, or opt for Taittinger, Irroy, Billecart-Salmon rose or Krug Grande Cuvee if you want something more French. The wine list celebrates old and new world bottles, playfully split into ‘quintessential’ and ‘adventure’.
