Not far short of its 500th birthday, The Lygon Arms stands firm as a charming centrepiece to the dreamy Cotswolds village of Broadway. With flagstone floors, wood panelling and stone mullion windows, the country-house hotel wears its long history proudly and makes an atmospheric Christmas party venue. The whole village makes a big effort every advent – a winter market runs the length of the high street – but it's the Lygon's guests that have it best of all. The vaulted Great Hall is the place for lavish sit-down affairs, while the Russell Room comes with its own heated terrace. The Cromwell Room, where Oliver and his generals drew up battle plans back in 1651, hosts cosy dinners around a magnificent Elizabethan fireplace.
