Fancy sniffing out the best dog-friendly restaurants in London? Whether you've got a bulldog or a basset-hound, a pug or a poodle, you and your dog should be free to break bread together in some of London’s coolest dining rooms. That's why we've scoured the capital, searching for restaurants that will let our doggos dine with us. After all, four-legged friends can be far more reliable than their human counterparts (and they’re cuter too). 

Gone are the days of sneakily feeding your pup under the table, as many restaurants now cater to diners and their furry friends alike. Bowls of water on arrival are standard fare, as are doggie treats and lots of attention from staff and diners alike. Some establishments go the extra mile; Drake & Morgan at King’s Cross offers some cheeky servings of ‘paw-secco’, a non-alcoholic still wine made especially for dogs, while L’Escargot in Soho has its very own resident pooch, Doris. Gaucho in Hampstead is one of the ultimate dog-friendly spots; the first Sunday of every month is ‘Doggy Sunday’ where dogs are provided with entertainment on the outdoor terrace and showered in gifts and treats, and doggy guests at Brutto in Farringdon will find themselves well fed and watered, and might even get a T-bone doggy bag to take home!

Pawsitive, Kensington

What: It doesn't get much more dog-friendly than Pawsitive, a trendy all-day cafe in Kensington designed for you and your dog in every sense. There's a pool pit and swing for your pooch to play on, along with a dedicated dog menu, in which your pet can enjoy twists on human favourites. Think a chicken pizza, steak and mash, and pupcakes! Owners have plenty to choose from as well, from awesome riffs on brunch - think a Pawsitive Burgerdict - to Malaysian dishes.

Straits Kitchen, Pan Pacific

What: Located in Pan Pacific London, right next to Liverpool Street Station, Singaporean spot Straits Kitchen offers your pooch the best in the business with a dog menu curated by dog behaviourist and nutritionist Anna Webb. Suitably titled the 'Dog's Dinner', your pet can enjoy a sushi-style lamb hot pot with seared lamb breast, mashed carrots and parsnips, and chicken bone broth gravy.

Egerton House Hotel, Kensington

What: Treat you and your pup to afternoon tea at Egerton House Hotel. Served in a cosy and traditional lounge area, the specially-designed Doggy Afternoon Tea menu includes chicken and beef meatloaf, oaty dog biscuits and a carrot cupcake to finish. But that's not all! You can opt for the hotel's resident artist to paint a portrait of your pooch while you dine, so you'll have something to take home with you at the end of your meal. Of course, owners are catered for with their own special offering, inclusing classic finger sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and patisseries such as chocolate cake and mini lemon meringue pies.

Pizarro, Bermondsey

What: Voted one of Evening Standard’s best dog friendly places to eat in London, Pizzaro is keen to ‘welcome dogs of all shapes and sizes.’ Although they can’t enter the main restaurant, pooches can enjoy the sights and smells from a spot at the window seats while doggy parents can devote their attention to the high quality seasonal Spanish dishes cooked in an open kitchen.

Brutto, Farringdon

What: Dogs are valued customers at this Italian old-school trattoria. The name comes from the saying ‘brutto ma buono’, or ‘ugly but good’, reflecting the deliciously hearty homecooked, but not quite picture-perfect nature of the food. Expect staff on hand to say ‘benvenuti’ to any canine visitors, before offering them a bowl of water and a bone to take home in a doggy bag. Brutto has a vibrant atmosphere and the combination of music and conversation can often get quite loud - bear this in mind when bringing more nervous dogs.

Baccala, London Bridge

What: This Italian restaurant and wine bar is an ideal spot for date night with its intimate feel, copious plates of pasta, and extensive wine list perfect for sharing a bottle between two. Whilst we love an excuse to have some alone time with a partner, there’s one exception where three isn’t always a crowd. If you bring your pooch along to dinner at Baccala, they can expect a warm welcome and plenty of fuss.

Megan's, Fulham

What: It’s impossible to escape four-legged friends at Megan’s, whether it’s dogs-galore at weekend brunch or the stylish pups in sunglasses on their website. The popular chain is supposedly working on a separate doggy menu, and already supplies water, beds and treats for dogs at all locations.

L'Escargot, Soho

What: This oh-so-traditional French restaurant spreads itself across several floors of a converted townhouse, and is a Soho institution. Furry folk will be glad to hear that L’Escargot welcomes dogs of all sizes, offering all pooches free snacks and water for as long as they’re ‘dining’. The restaurant also has its very own resident English bulldog called Doris, who often pops out to say hello to diners, which could lead to a serious case of puppy love.

What: If you’re looking to celebrate your doggy in style, then head to the Hampstead branch of steakhouse group Gaucho on the first Sunday of every month. If you book a table under your dog’s name and quote ‘Doggy Sunday’, Gaucho will roll out the red carpet for your pooch, entertaining them on the outdoor terrace while gracing all pups with gifts, treats and even a bowl each of specially made paw-secco.

What: At this classy yet casual brasserie, dogs and their owners are welcome to roam around the terrace or to cosy up in a booth by the bar. Bluebird, Chelsea

What: Rather than simply just allowing dogs, Bluebird is a restaurant that positively embraces them. Staff will welcome your four-legged companion with warm smiles and hugs, and make sure to keep any doggy thirst quenched with a bowl of water (tap or still is available). They’ll also receive a bag of treats for them to enjoy while their doggy parents tuck into the likes of lobster spaghetti and pork chop with apple sauce.

The Duck and Rice, Soho

What: This casual Chinese joint welcomes dogs of all shapes and sizes, providing any four-legged visitors with a bowl of water, a generous portion of treats and plenty of fuss from the staff. It’s one of very few Chinese restaurants in London which allow dogs, while puppy parents will surely be tempted by the menu of comfort food dishes – think sesame prawn toast, chicken katsu curry, and of course, various combinations of duck and rice.

What: This US burger joint crossed over to British shores a few years back, and gained plenty of fans thanks to its all-dogs-welcome policy. In fact, any pups that walk through the doors here can enjoy dog biscuits topped with vanilla icing and a side of peanut butter sauce. Puppy parents meanwhile, can enjoy Shake Shack’s range of burgers, milkshakes and sides, including crinkle-cut fries topped with American cheese sauce.

Minnow, Clapham

What: All pale tones and chic design, Minnow is a relaxing oasis of a restaurant, and chilled out dogs are more than welcome on the ground floor or on the street-side terrace. They’ll be provided with fresh water in a rather fancy dog bowl, and they’ll also be able to munch on biscuits. As for the humans, they can tuck into a menu of seasonally changing fare, which might include the likes of lamb rump with chimichurri or cauliflower steak with mushroom puree.

sketch: The Parlour, Mayfair

What: If your pooch is part of London’s ‘in’ crowd, a trip to Sketch is practically a rite of passage. Sadly, dogs with a taste for fine-dining aren’t allowed in Sketch’s Michelin-starred Library, but fashion conscious pups do have free reign at the venue’s Parlour, where they’re allowed to strut their stuff from 7am until 4pm. Expect a bowl of water to keep them hydrated and plenty of love and attention from Sketch’s team of dog lovers.

The Thomas Cubitt, Belgravia

What: This gastropub has old-school charm in spades, thanks to its Regency townhouse setting and oak flooring. Weekend evenings can be a little too busy for hounds, but earlier in the day is fine. You and your pup can sit together as you enjoy Thomas Cubbit’s seasonal menu, which includes stuffed courgette flowers, pan-fried trout and desserts such as bread and butter pudding with vanilla ice cream and a caramelised apple and vanilla custard tart.

The Drapers Arms, Islington

What: At this lively neighbourhood pub, dogs on leads are welcome in the patio garden. While (hopefully) soaking up the sunshine, dog owners can tuck into the daily-changing menu of modern comfort food. On your visit, you might find the likes of sirloin steak with dripping potatoes and spinach, or perhaps citrus-cured salmon with pickled shallots, dill and crème fraiche. Dog bowls filled with water will keep your pup entertained too.

Marksman Public House, Bethnal Green

What: This Michelin pub of the year is a true contrast of the old and the new, with traditional British pub style décor on the ground floor and a zany upstairs dining room with a woven ceiling and lino floor in primary colours. Dogs are welcome inside, but must remain on the ground floor. Be sure to let the restaurant know in advance if you’re planning on bringing any furry friends.
