SquareMeal Review of Zizzi Wigmore Street

Nationwide Italian chain Zizzi is not exactly the last word in cutting-edge culinary cool, but it’s been quick off the mark to introduce some hot new trends. A range of gelati by Kitty Travers (the artisan ice-cream maker talent-spotted by St John’s Fergus Henderson) & a recently introduced menu of ‘cichetti’ (Italian-style ‘tapas’) as seen at far hipper addresses, are reasons to revisit your local branch. The rest of the menu may not wow, cautions a reader, ‘but it’s nothing to spoil your day’. Pastas are reliable, & the pizzas – some of which come as half & half variations or hybrids – help those stuck between king prawn & spicy sausage or regular pizza & calzone. Zizzi aims to please, & its comfortably rustic, flatteringly lit restaurants usually do just that.

Zizzi used to be a great, mid-priced Italian chain and we were regulars here, but it's downgraded its menu so much in recent years we've stopped going — you will find very little on the menu that isn't carbohydrate or fried. I like an occasional (weekly) plate of pasta for dinner, but at least want to balance that with a healthy starter. You'll find none of the simple Italian choices that might lend some balance to your meal. Tomato and mozzarella? Proscuitto and melon? A few asparagus spears? Forget it. Zizzi has snazzy premises and pretends to be grown up, but it's really just for kids — adults will be disappointment by the limited menu and should know better.

Disappointing
We have used Zizzi's plenty of times and have never been disappointed but last nights' meal was very disappointing. The food was bland and tasteless and the olives we had as a starter were raw. Apparently they had run out of the normal olives. I am glad we had a 50% off voucher for our main course as we would have been even more disappointed had we paid the full price. Hopefully this was a one off and Zizzi's will get back to its normal good food and good value for money restaurant.

Zizzi - Wigmore Street
Zizzi's on Wigmore Street is an excellent place to go for lunch with colleagues or a for a light dinner in the evening. The food is good, service is very good with very helpful staff who do not rush you not matter how busy they are. Excellent value for money!
