SquareMeal Review of Wiltons

Gold Award

Having graduated from 18th-century shellfish trader to 21st-century seafood aristocrat, Wiltons is proof-positive that selling fish is an honourable calling. Since 1984, this impeccably groomed grandee has been making waves in its current home on upper-crust Jermyn Street, and prospective diners are still expected to arrive suitably attired (jackets and ties please, gents).

One fan thinks this blue-blooded veteran is “the best seafood restaurant in London”. We wouldn’t go that far, but it’s worth donning your best bib and tucker and switching off your electronic devices for a taste of Wiltons’ superlative molluscs and crustacea, lemon sole Véronique, halibut Newburg, poached turbot and other classics of yore.

If red meat is your idea of heaven, look to the carving trolley for trencherman lunchtime roasts (Romney Marsh lamb, free-range Blythburgh pork etc) or wait until furred and feathered game have their triumphant seasonal moments – think venison Wellington, roast grouse or jugged hare with roast squash and quince.

To conclude, summon up the past with a plate of soft herring roes on toast or take the sweet option by plumping for a nostalgic dessert such as Bramley apple and Victoria plum crumble with custard – or perhaps Wiltons’ legendary bread-and-butter pud.

The mood is hushed, archaic and defiantly old school, service is ultra-polite, and the wine list is generously endowed with vintage clarets and Burgundies from the great years. Needless to say, prices are exceedingly high – although astronomical bills are unlikely to trouble the largely male clientele in their Savile row suits and Churchill shoes.

Classic English restaurant serving the best of classic English food. I remember getting choked up when my rack of lamb arrived - cooked to perfection - just by the sheer simple beauty of what was arrayed on the plate. Service is excellent..attentive but unobtrusive. Diligent but not cloying. The real deal.

Whilst this restaurant doesn't have much ambiance mid week, the food is always excellent and the staff are very attentive.

Perhaps the quintessential London eatery just like Oscar wilde said, my tastes are simple only the best. Wilton produces the finest fish and fare in London. No pretence just glorious cuisine and masterful service. It cant improve on real perfection and at reasonable prices.

The definition of a classic...
What can one say about Wilton's. It is an institution, and for good reasons. What is good about this restaurant? Well, pretty much everything. The food is very good - British cuisine at it's best, simplicity executed incredibly well, allowing the produce and flavours to do the talking, not a chef's ego. My meal consisted of a cheese and onion soup (delicious, utterly delicious), cod with romesco puree (delightful and full of flavour - and I say this as someone who usually avoids the fish option), and a super apple crumble. The service is first class - attentive yet unobtrusive. You are very well looked after by the staff. It is clear that they all have a specific role, but the shared purpose is simply to allow you to enjoy your meal. The restaurant itself is also beautiful. Understated style and comfort - classic in every sense of the word. Combined with a a good crowd of businessmen enjoying their lunch and talking intently with their dining partners, it had the sense of a restaurant with purpose and life. As for what is bad? Well, it's hard to really single anything out. As close as I could find is the astronomical prices of the a la carte menu, and the limited selection of Loire Valley reds on the wine list... But at this stage I think we really are getting overly critical. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. Especially if one makes use of the Square Meal deal of £30 for the three course seasonal menu with a glass of Champagne included. We did just that (and with that deal, the value is arguably four stars, as opposed to the three I gave based on the a la carte prices).

very good venue in St. James's
A meal of shelfish and crustacea - oysters, crab, lobster - of superb quality, especially the Newburg lobster. Very tasty and balanced the dessert, a chocolate fondant. Extraordinary the wine, Finca la Florencia, a chardonnay of Argentina, indeed great for value in a wine list with exaggerated mark-ups. Not unforgettable the Pedro Ximenez. Very polite, helpful and effective the Hungarian waitress. Overall a great venue, absolutely to go.
