SquareMeal Review of William IV Islington

Bronze Award

All cream-panelled walls and crackling fire, this regal boozer is a world away from the bawdy bars of Shoreditch. The William IV has been under new ownership since summer 2010 – a change that has brought a decidedly more gastronomic twist to the food. The menu offers nostalgic British favourites, with well-priced dishes to suit varying appetites and times of the day. The 20- and 30something punters tuck into brunches of kippers with bubble & squeak, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on sourdough, snacks of potted shrimp on toast, oysters and devils on horseback, and dinners of shepherdess pie followed by lemon posset with shortbread. Polite, capable staff serve pints of Black Sheep, Timothy Taylor and Greene King IPA, & the wine list features a decent selection of Old World bottles, with some original choices.

Since the new owners took over the pub over a year ago, the pub has gone from strength to strength. A real British pub which serves quality ales, lovely British food (especially a great Sunday Roast) and provides wonderful, personal customer service in a non-pretentious, laid back atmosphere. A real gem off the beaten track. Would definitely recommend!

This restaurant is closed for the time being apparently. I read this, and their number and website are both not working

This place has recently changed hands and they haven't got it right yet so beware. The place was cold and has lost a lot of the charm it used to have. Service was slow and the food was embarrassingly bad. The one saving grace was that the manager seemed to completely understand when we refused to pay our bill – so at least it was a cheap night!

i booked my 40th birthday party here. it was a triumph! fantastic service and customer care from the initial enquiry, to organizing right through to booting us all out at 1.30. the food is not fancy or even very ‘gastroy’ but in my view all the better for it. its simple fresh well made English pub fare. i would recommend this to anyone, and have, especially if you want to organize a casual and intimate private party in the fabulous upstairs Geography Room.
