SquareMeal Review of The White Horse Brancaster

Bronze Award

Natural colours and modern artwork define this relaxed and stylish north Norfolk pub, where the sea views are beyond compare. The conservatory dining room maximises the view and puts the emphasis on fresh fish, taking in lots of local stuff such as Brancaster Staithe’s famous mussels and locally smoked salmon. Roasted megrim sole with confit potatoes, shaved fennel salad, cucumber and caper butter or grey mullet with chorizo, squid tagliatelle and basil pesto reveal decent cooking technique, but there’s always something meaty, say 28-day matured Norfolk sirloin steak with garlic and brown shrimp butter or pork tenderloin and belly with butternut squash lasagne. Local beer and wine adds appeal. Outside, the cool, modern terrace rewards lingering over drinks with great sunset views, and the relaxed attitude of the young, cheerful staff adds to the all-pervasive charm.

The Marshside Bar and Marquee takes advantage of the views and looks set to remain a popular summer fixture. While stopping off at the Staithe Smokehouse (in the garden) is a rewarding experience if you're looking for high quality smoked produce for home meals or picnics.

Was looking forward to our visit, travelled up from northamptonshire, the venue and staff were spot on, staff 100% attentive and nothing too much trouble. The Food we had was good. My visit would of been better if the seafood available on the platter was available as individual dishes, would of liked prawns, maybe mussels, but not everything on the platter. I know you can see the menu leading up to the visit, but there is no waiver

Views from the conservatory are fantastic. There is an out door area which would be perfect for summer cocktails. Brancaster mussels are gorgeous. Service is a bit hit and miss but it may be due to the fun and friendly young staff. They also do half bottles of good wines which is great if you are driving or prefer drinking lightly at lunch time.
