SquareMeal Review of The Wheatsheaf Inn - Burford

Absurdly pretty Northleach was once a wool town of serious substance and it still bears all the trappings of wealth. At the heart of things is this gussied-up, wisteria-clad hostelry with its smart Farrow & Ball paintwork, flagstone floors, open fires, laid-back vibe and 14 elegant bedrooms attached. The food has a strong seasonal accent – ‘devilled kidneys on toast in winter, and crab in summer are superb’, notes a fan; otherwise, the menu spans everything from beer-battered whiting to excellent pork belly in tonnata sauce. Sunday brunch is the stuff of local legend, from plates of prawns and smoked salmon on toast with a glass of detox juice to belt-busting roast rib of well-hung Butts Farm beef with Yorkshire pudding and horseradish sauce. To finish, be sure to leave room for the warm treacle tart with clotted-cream ice cream.

The Wheatsheaf is a great place, combining cosy country atmosphere with very good food and a great choice of wines presented by an enthusiastic Angela, who will uniquely describe her wines from all around the world. The devilled kidneys (in winter) and crab (in summer) are superb, the recently added pork belly in tonnata sauce is delicious, as well as the cheddar souffle' and everything from the charcoal grill. In summer enjoy a beautiful well kept back garden.

I found the Wheatsheaf via the Square Meal iPhone application, so right away I felt just a tiny bit smug that technology had allowed me to find a good meal that I would have otherwise failed to do. We were 4 for lunch and had main courses only – moules/frites, chicken, steak/frites and a kids meal not featured on the menu but specially prepared by the chef. And then a couple of ice creams. We were knocked out. The corn fed chicken was a heavenly texture and full of flavour – just beautifully cooked. The steak (which I ordered ‘medium’) again, was cooked to perfection, not dry but juicy and, well, perfect. The service was provided by two cheerful and smiling young ladies who attended to our every need along with that magical ‘third eye’ that keeps a watch on diners and seems to be so lacking in most restaurants. Like many who frequent these pages, I've eaten all over the world but rarely would review anywhere. I'm making an exception for the Wheatsheaf, it was stunning and the owner should be really very proud of today's lunch! PS, no phone signal in the town, but a good (and free) wifi connection at the Wheatsheaf.
